I found this book very evocative and intriguing. Appelt is a beautiful writer--thought I thought her prose could have benefited from being tightened a bit. With such powerful characters and setting, it could have been more impactful if it rambled less. And, while I don't usually worry about this, I had trouble imagining a kid reading this book (usually I believe, if it's a good book, there are kids out there who will like it). It just had the feel of an adult book in terms of structure and language and even theme. Still, it was such a vivid book that I really enjoyed reading it. And it made me want a cat when I am not a cat person, so it must be doing something right!
